Aberfan Cemetery – Aberfan Disaster Memorials
On the 21 October 1966, 144 people, 116 of them children, were killed when a tip of coal waste slid onto the village of Aberfan in South Wales. The original Portland and Nabresina Stone memorials erected in Aberfan Cemetery for the majority of the victims shortly after disaster had begun to deteriorate and in 2007 the Aberfan Memorial Charity decided to replace and upgrade all of the memorials and archways and refurbish the Memorial Garden area.
This two year contract involved the staged replacement of the weathered original masonry with new polished Pearl White granite – the re-engraving of all inscriptions and the erection of additional archways. Restoration and refurbishment work was carried out on the Memorial Garden walling, steps and utility building.
All work was completed to an exceptionally high standard, on budget and ahead of schedule.
Testimonial:At the recent Trustees’ meeting, it was agreed that it was now timely to express our sincere thanks to you personally, and to all your team, for all the hard work that has been put in all round.
Nothing has been too much trouble for you; always available at the end of the phone and willing to meet on site at short notice if necessary. All works were carried out expeditiously, to the highest standards of workmanship, and on or ahead of time.
This was a challenging experience for me and the other Trustees, seeking to project manage such a large and important piece of work. I must say that you have somehow managed to make my life over the past 12 months far less fraught than it might otherwise have been!
The level of service and of workmanship from you and all the Mossfords staff has been impeccable and, indeed, far in excess of what we might reasonably have expected to receive.
Please pass on our congratulations to all the team – those we have come to know on site and those behind the scenes – who have contributed to make this project such a success.
David Davies J.P. – Chairman Of Trustees, The Aberfan Memorial Charity
