Slate boulder at the entrance to Briwnant Chapel in north Cardiff

We at Mossfords Memorial Masons were truly honoured to play our part in the creation and installation of two stunning Welsh slate entrance boulders at the site of two popular chapels located inside the grounds of Thornhill Crematorium in north Cardiff.

Thornhill Crematorium were seeking two large boulders that could serve as a striking feature at the entrance of their Wenallt and Briwnant chapels.

We played our part in the memorial boulder project alongside Cardiff based Stone Sign Company, expert stone specialists who offer all manner of bespoke stone signs, commemorative stone plaques, and boulders.

Watch the stunning Welsh slate boulders being created and installed at the Wenallt and Briwnant chapels at Thornhill Crematorium in Cardiff:

Quality Slate Sourced from North Wales

The existing entrance at Thornhill Crematorium already features a strong Welsh slate presence, so it was agreed that this should be carried through to the entrance boulders of each chapel.

The large slate boulders feature a stunning 23.5ct gold leaf engraving with the name of each chapel, as well as the Cardiff Council logo directly underneath.

The unique slate boulders were carefully sourced and selected from a quarry in north Wales, which is an area rich in high quality Welsh slate that is used and appreciated all over the world.

This particular Welsh slate is extremely durable and able to easily survive the tests of the outdoor environment while retaining its immense natural beauty – this is the reason so many choose Welsh slate for their outdoor boulder project.

Visualising the Final Result with Artwork

Once the boulders had been selected they were carefully transported south to production facilities in Cardiff. Each boulder was sawn at the base using a CNC saw, and drill holes were made for a steel dowelling to keep each boulder in place once installed.

A site visit was made to Thornhill Crematorium so that the installation sites could be professionally assessed and photographed.

These photographs were used by the in-house design team to create artwork for Thornhill Crematorium that depicted how the finished result would look with each entrance boulder in place.

The Specialist Engraving & Installation of Each Boulder

Once Thornhill Crematorium had confirmed the design they were happy to go ahead with, our stonemasons and engravers were able to get to work with the slate boulders to bring the vision to life.

The boulders were expertly engraved and gilded by our specialist memorial masons using 23.5ct gold lettering.

The contrast between the bright gold leaf and blue-black tones of the slate boulder material is quite exceptional and always draws wonderful compliments.

Once the boulders were complete, our professional memorial installation team worked closely with experts from the Stone Sign Company to transport the boulders to Thornhill Crematorium.

From here, the teams carefully installed each boulder into its new home using a HIAB crane to lower them into place atop their concrete foundation and steel dowel.
