Blending innovation with tradition, Mossfords Memorial Masons’ construction division were proud to contribute their specialist expertise to the Royal Mint Visitor Centre in Llantrisant — a landmark project that celebrates both British heritage and contemporary design excellence.

Working alongside main contractor ISG and Rio Architects, Mossfords were responsible for the installation of new stonework to the building’s central spine wall, a defining architectural feature of the award-winning visitor centre. The cladding project began in April 2016, marking the start of a collaboration that combined technical precision, aesthetic vision, and enduring craftsmanship.

MODERN SYSTEMS, TRADITIONAL SKILLS

The Marianna Grey sandstone chosen for the project was initially sourced in Germany, fabricated in Poland, and finally finished to perfection at Mossfords’ production facility in Cardiff. This global journey of material and expertise underscores the attention to quality and detail that defines Mossfords’ work.

The stone was installed using a modern rainscreen cladding system, securely fixed to a steel framing system (SFS) and cement particle (CP) board. Each stone panel was attached to a vertical rail system using one-piece, four-way stainless steel clips fixed with Tek screws – ensuring a robust, durable finish designed to last for generations.

A CONTEMPORARY APPROACH TO TIMELESS DESIGN

Stone cladding has become the natural choice for forward-thinking buildings that need to harmonise with their surroundings, particularly in historic or architecturally rich areas. The Royal Mint Visitor Centre is a shining example of this balance – a modern space that feels rooted in the local landscape, enhanced by the texture and tone of natural stone.

Through projects like this, Mossfords continues to demonstrate how heritage craftsmanship and modern construction innovation can work hand in hand – delivering results that are as beautiful as they are enduring.
